Hiring dietitians & nutritionists in Denver: a quick guide
Dietitians and nutritionists in Denver help people change how they eat for a health reason or a personal goal. Common reasons include diabetes or prediabetes, high cholesterol, digestive problems such as IBS, food allergies, recovery from disordered eating, pregnancy, weight concerns and fueling for sport. The two titles are not the same. A registered dietitian (RD or RDN) has completed an accredited degree, supervised practice and a national exam. Colorado does not license dietitians or nutritionists, and anyone may call themselves a nutritionist, so training varies widely: some nutritionists hold advanced credentials such as CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist), while others are wellness coaches. Each listing below shows the credentials the practice states on its own website. Many Denver practices offer video visits, and insurance is most often accepted by registered dietitians.
Questions to ask before you hire
What are your credentials, and are you a registered dietitian (RD or RDN)?
Have you worked with people who have my condition or goal?
Do you take my insurance, and if not, what does each visit cost?
Are visits in person, by video, or both?
How many sessions do most clients need, and is there support between visits?
Do you sell supplements or lab tests, and are they required?
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?▾
A registered dietitian (RD or RDN) has completed an accredited degree, supervised practice and a national exam. "Nutritionist" is not a regulated title in Colorado, so a nutritionist's training can range from a graduate degree and a CNS credential to a short coaching course. Ask any provider what their credentials are.
Does insurance cover a dietitian in Colorado?▾
Many health plans cover nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian, but it depends on your plan and your diagnosis. Medicare Part B covers medical nutrition therapy for diabetes and kidney disease with a doctor's referral. Call the number on your insurance card to confirm before you book.
Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?▾
You can usually book without one. Some insurance plans, and Medicare, require a doctor's referral before they will pay for the visit.
What is a sports dietitian?▾
A registered dietitian who specializes in fueling for training and competition. The advanced credential is CSSD (Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics). Type "sports" in the search box on this page to see practices that list sports nutrition.
Can I see a Denver dietitian online?▾
Yes. Many practices on this page offer video visits. Use the "Virtual visits" filter to see them.
